- Oriental roaches are dark and shiny and prefer damp, cool spots like basements and areas around drains.
Knowing the type matters because it tells you where to treat. German roaches call for gel bait inside kitchen and bathroom cabinets, while American and Oriental roaches point you toward drains, damp areas, and the gaps where they slip in from outside.
What Actually Works to Get Rid of Cockroaches
Skip the panic and work on the problem in this order:
- Cut off the food and water first. Wipe counters, sweep crumbs, seal food and pet food, run the dishes, and fix any drips. With nothing to eat, roaches are more likely to move on, and the ones that stay will go after the bait you set next.
- Use gel bait, not a can of spray. Place small dabs of roach gel in the cracks and corners where roaches travel, like under the sink, behind the fridge, and along baseboards. They'll feed on it, carry it back to their hiding spots, and it spreads through the group.
- Seal their hideouts. Caulk cracks, close gaps around pipes, and add door sweeps so new roaches have a harder time getting in.
- Clear the clutter. Cardboard, paper bags, and stacks of newspaper are prime roach real estate, so clear them out.
Skip the Bug Bomb
We'll save you the trouble and the money: total-release foggers, the classic bug bomb, are one of the worst tools for roaches. The mist coats open surfaces but never reaches the wall voids and cracks where roaches actually hide.
